La vibrante personalidad y energía ilimitada de Karina son inmediatamente evidentes a todos los que la conocen. Su positividad es contagiosa y atrae a la gente sin esfuerzo con su espíritu magnético. En 2016, una amiga, Berta Márquez, invitó a Karina a una reunión del Grupo Comunitario de Liderazgo (NLG, por sus siglas en inglés) de San Pedro/All Peoples, donde rápidamente se convirtió en una participante activa. Para el año 2020, su dedicación y entusiasmo la llevaron a ser elegida como representante del NLG En este rol, Karina valientemente empezó a compartir su historia personal. Tiene una condición que afecta su cerebro y se le dificulta el aprendizaje y la retención de información. A pesar de estos obstáculos, siempre es la primera en ofrecerse como voluntaria y participar en actividades. “Me encanta ser amable, tener conversaciones y ser más comunicativa en general”, dice.
Una invitación a tomar acción
El enfoque de Karina es claro: es directa sobre los problemas y participa profundamente en su comunidad. Su trayectoria es tanto una invitación como una llamada a la acción para quienes la conocen. Con valentía y perseverancia, Karina no solo ha enfrentado los retos de su discapacidad sino que se ha convertido en una parte principal de su comunidad. Inicialmente, se sentía incómoda al hablar frente a grupos y enfrentaba retos significativos para moverse. Sin embargo, estos obstáculos no la detuvieron. Distribuyó volantes, interactuó con miembros de la comunidad, reclutó a nuevos participantes y asistió a reuniones a pesar de su viaje de una hora que incluía autobuses, el metro y caminar.
Los esfuerzos de Karina han tenido un impacto significativo en su comunidad, aumentando la membresía de 16 a 52 miembros. A lo largo del camino ha adquirido confianza y formado amistades duraderas, demostrando el poder de determinación y tenacidad. “Si yo lo puedo hacer con mi discapacidad y la hora que me lleva llegar a las reuniones, ¿por qué usted no? Usted puede convertirse en representante como yo y abogar por lo que importa a su comunidad”.

¿Qué es la Colectiva de Transformación Comunitaria?
Best Start Región 1 (BSR1) es un movimiento basado en el lugar para fortalecer la comunidad que está compuesto de más de 1.000 residentes comunitarios y colaboradores organizativos de varios sectores que trabajan juntos para efectuar cambios en su región. Con una inversión inicial de First 5 LA, esta región incluye a las comunidades del Este de Los Ángeles, Metro Los, Ángeles, Sur El Monte/El Monte y el Sureste de Los Ángeles. BSR1 es dirigido por la Colaborativa de Transformación Comunitaria (CTC) dentro de Para Los Niños. La CTC apoya a miembros de la comunidad en la transformación de condiciones sistémicas para que los niños, las familias y las comunidades puedan florecer. Esta estrategia del cambio de sistemas desarrolla y cultiva colaboraciones transformativas para la región para que diseñen juntos, implementen, comuniquen, movilicen y evalúen estrategias.
Meet Karina Noriega
Karina's vibrant personality and boundless energy are immediately evident to anyone who meets her. Her positivity is contagious, and she effortlessly draws people in with her magnetic spirit. In 2016, a friend, Berta Márquez, invited Karina to a meeting of San Pedro/All Peoples Neighborhood Leadership Group (NLG), where she quickly became an active participant. By 2020, her dedication and enthusiasm led to her selection as a representative for the NLG. In this role, Karina courageously began sharing her personal story. She has a condition that affects her brain, making learning and retaining information challenging. Despite these obstacles, she is always the first to volunteer and participate in activities. “I love being friendly, having conversations, and being more communicative in general,” she says.
An invitation to action
Karina’s focus is clear: she is direct about issues and deeply involved in her community. Her journey is both an invitation and a call to action for those who meet her. With courage and perseverance, Karina has not only faced the challenges of her disability but has become a key player in her community. Initially, she was uncomfortable speaking in front of groups and faced significant challenges in getting around. However, these hurdles did not deter her. She distributed flyers, engaged with community members, recruited new participants, and attended meetings despite the hour-long journey involving buses, the metro, and walking.
Karina's efforts have significantly impacted her community, increasing group membership from 16 to 52 members. Along the way, she has gained confidence and formed lasting friendships, showcasing the power of determination and resilience. “If I can do it with my disability, with the hour it takes me to get to meetings, why not you? You too can become a representative like me and advocate for what matters to your community.”
Karina’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the difference one determined individual can make. Connecting to and participating in groups like NLG fosters an environment for growth, skill building, and creating new possibilities and achievements. Her message is clear: regardless of the challenges you face, you have the power to create positive change in your community.
What is the Community Transformation Collective?
Best Start Region 1 (BSR1) is a place-based, community-building movement made up of over 1,000 community residents and cross-sector organizational partners who work together to affect change in their region. With an initial investment from First 5 LA, this region includes the communities of East Los Angeles, Metro Los Angeles, South El Monte/El Monte, and Southeast Los Angeles. BSR1 is driven by the Community Transformation Collective (CTC) within Para Los Niños. The CTC supports community members to transform systemic conditions so that children, families, and neighborhoods can thrive. Our systems change approach builds and cultivates transformational partnerships for the region to co-design, implement, communicate, mobilize, and evaluate strategies.
