Presentamos a María Padilla
Por causa de una invitación casual de una amiga quien es también líder comunitaria y promotora, María asistió a una reunión en su comunidad de Bell Gardens. Está reunión fue el primer paso en su trayectoria de evolucionar sus habilidades de liderazgo y de convertirse en una agente de cambio. Cuando llegó por primera vez a Bell Gardens, hace más de veintisiete años, María buscó cómo abogar por más recursos, becas y otra información para sus hijos pequeños y otros niños de su comunidad. Con el paso de los años, María se conectó con sus vecinos y otros vecinos, juntando historias y experiencias que le llevaron a involucrarse más, aprender, buscar soluciones y traer más recursos a su comunidad.
Fomentar un Espíritu de Comunidad.
María ha logrado muchas cosas desde que empezó como voluntaria en Bell Gardens. Ha alcanzado logros personales y también comunitarios. Impulsada por su tenacidad y determinación, este éxito también ha sido motivado por una comunidad de apoyo y las oportunidades de capacitación que ha catalizado como miembros de movimientos impulsados por la comunidad como CTC y BSR1, donde hay espacio para practicar el desarrollo de poder y la movilización comunitaria en tiempo real.
Utilizando sus experiencias, inclusive de las que tuvo con CTC y BSR1, María desarrolló El Kioskito, un proyecto comunitario que se lanzó en 2024. María empleó lo que había aprendido para transformar lo que inicialmente fue una venta comunitaria de varias cosas incluyendo arte y manualidades, a un centro donde vecinos y residentes se juntan para reunirse, aprender, hacer compras y fomentar a su comunidad. Demostrando la importancia de la conexión directa entre las organizaciones comunitarias y las personas a las que surgen, María invitó a organizaciones comunitarias y agencias locales a compartir información y recursos muy necesarios sobre varios temas como vivienda, salud y el ambiente, entre más.
El Kioskito se ha convertido en un lugar donde promotores pueden ofrecer apoyo directo y educación a miembros de la comunidad, mediante juntas individuales y en grupo. María ha usado lo mejor de sus habilidades y colaborado con otras personas para duplicar las prácticas del desarrollo de movimientos y poder con los de su comunidad. Al reflexionar sobre la implementación de las habilidades que desarrolló con CTC y BSR1 en este proyecto, María comentó, “Sé que este proyecto inspirará a otras personas que sienten que no tienen habilidad, porque todos tenemos muchas habilidades. Nada más es cuestión de decir, lo puedo hacer, lo quiero hacer y lo voy a hacer. ¡Con el apoyo de organizaciones como CTC/BSR1, sabemos que podemos hacerlo y podemos crear más proyectos y espacios dirigidos por la comunidad!”
¿Qué significa para usted la futura transformación?
“Creo que es importante que nosotros, como seres humanos, tengamos metas y sueños y que nos esforcemos por lograrlos, que nos esforzamos mucho…Quiero seguir creciendo. Quiero, de alguna forma, poder compartir lo que he aprendido de esta organización y contribuir a mi comunidad y enseñarles todo lo que me ha ayudado a crecer para que ellos también pueden experimentar lo que yo he experimentado, que es otra forma de vivir, una de conocimiento y concienciación…para que todos juntos podamos beneficiar a nuestras comunidades”. - María Padilla
¿Qué es la Colectiva de Transformación Comunitaria?
Best Start Región 1 (BSR1) es un movimiento basado en el lugar para fortalecer la comunidad que está compuesto de más de 1.000 residentes comunitarios y colaboradores organizativos de varios sectores que trabajan juntos para efectuar cambios en su región. Con una inversión inicial de First 5 LA, esta región incluye a las comunidades del Este de Los Ángeles, Metro Los, Ángeles, Sur El Monte/El Monte y el Sureste de Los Ángeles. BSR1 es dirigido por la Colaborativa de Transformación Comunitaria (CTC) dentro de Para Los Niños. La CTC apoya a miembros de la comunidad en la transformación de condiciones sistémicas para que los niños, las familias y las comunidades puedan florecer. Esta estrategia del cambio de sistemas desarrolla y cultiva colaboraciones transformativas para la región para que diseñen juntos, implementen, comuniquen, movilicen y evalúen estrategias.
Meet Maria Padilla
On a chance invitation from a friend who is also a community leader and promoter, Maria attended a meeting in her community of Bell Gardens. This meeting was the first step in her journey to evolve her leadership abilities and become a change agent. When she first arrived in Bell Gardens over twenty-seven years ago, Maria sought ways to advocate for more resources, scholarships, and other information for her young children and other children in the community. Over the years, Maria connected with neighbors and other residents, collecting stories and experiences that led her to become more involved, learn, seek solutions, and bring more resources into her community.
Building Community
Maria has achieved many things since she began volunteering in Bell Gardens. She has attained both personal and community-centered accomplishments. Driven by her tenacity and determination, this success has also been motivated by a community of support and the skill-building opportunities she has catalyzed as a member of community-led movements like CTC and BSR1, where there is space to practice power-building and community mobilization in real time.
Drawing on experiences, including those with CTC and BSR1, Maria developed El Kioskito, a community project launched in 2024. Maria used what she learned to transform what was initially a community yard, art and craft sale, into a hub for neighbors and residents to gather, learn, shop, and nurture their community. Demonstrating the importance of direct connections between community-based organizations and the people they serve, Maria brought in community-based organizations and local agencies to share much-needed information and resources on various topics like housing, health, and the environment, among many others.
El Kioskito has become a place for Promoters to offer direct support and education to community members through individual and group convenings. Maria has taken the best of her honed skills and collaborated with others to replicate power and movement-building practices with those in her community. Reflecting on implementing the skills she developed with CTC and BSR1 in this project, Maria commented, “I know this project will inspire other people who feel that they don’t have the skills, because we all have so many skills. It is only a matter of saying I can do it, I want to do it, and I will do it. With the support of organizations like CTC/BSR1, we know we can do it, and we can build more community-driven projects and spaces!”
What does future transformation mean to you?
“I believe it is important that we human beings have goals and dreams and work to reach them, work very hard…I want to keep growing. I want to in some way share what I have learned from this organization and give back to my community and teach them all that has helped me grow so they, too can experience what I have experienced, which is a different way of life, one of knowledge and awareness…so that all together we can benefit our communities.” - Maria Padilla
What is the Community Transformation Collective?
Best Start Region 1 (BSR1) is a place-based, community-building movement made up of over 1,000 community residents and cross-sector organizational partners who work together to affect change in their region. With an initial investment from First 5 LA, this region includes the communities of East Los Angeles, Metro Los Angeles, South El Monte/El Monte, and Southeast Los Angeles. BSR1 is driven by the Community Transformation Collective (CTC) within Para Los Niños. The CTC supports community members to transform systemic conditions so that children, families, and neighborhoods can thrive. Our systems change approach builds and cultivates transformational partnerships for the region to co-design, implement, communicate, mobilize, and evaluate strategies.
